Cradlepoint Zscaler Internet Security Outage
June 27, 2018
Cradlepoint experienced a service interruption with Cradlepoint Zscaler Internet Security content filter solution.  This interruption caused the TLS tunnel required for this solution to disconnect and fail to reconnect.  Service may have been affected from  June 14, 2018 to June 21, 2018.
To ensure that Cradlepoint and Zscaler device are compliant with the latest security standards (i.e. PCI, HIPPA, etc.), Cradlepoint and Zscaler are moving the Cradlepoint Zscaler Internet Security Solution to TLS version 1.2.  However, due to a miscommunication, these activities caused the service to become temporarily unavailable.
All connections to the Cradlepoint Zscaler Internet Security servers would have been disconnected during this service interruption, and, depending on your configuration, would have resulted in either:
  • all web traffic being blocked, or
  • web traffic continuing to flow without content filtering policies being applied.
Cradlepoint recommends reviewing your Zscaler configuration to ensure the TLS tunnel has been reestablished.  And, while we don’t anticipate an issue of this nature occurring again, it is best practice and we recommend that you have alerting configured for Zscaler Internet Security tunnel status.

Here is how to configure alerts from NetCloud Manager: NetCloud Manager: Alerting and Reporting
Here is how to configure alerts from the Local Router: NCOS: How to configure Device Alerts on a Cradlepoint Router
Here is how to trouble shoot your Zscaler Tunnel connection: NCOS: CLI - Troubleshooting Zscaler

Cradlepoint understands the needs of customers to have a secure, always available networking solution and has taken steps to correct the circumstances that lead to this outage.
As part of our dedication to our customers, we will be updating the Cradlepoint Zscaler Internet Security solution to use TLS version 1.2 in our upcoming NCOS release in August but do not anticipate this disrupting your Internet connection service.
