Series 3: How to setup Dynamic DNS

Summary

This article describes how to configure a Dynamic DNS (DynDNS) on a Series 3 Cradlepoint router.

Some Internet service providers assign publicly routable dynamically assigned IP addresses to their customers. These IP addresses may change daily, which makes it difficult to do remote administration, VPN, or portforwarding. Each time the address changes, the user must figure out the current address and reconfigure any address-dependent services before they can function correctly again.

Dynamic DNS services provide a single hostname, which is constantly updated with the IP information sent from the router. Each time the public IP address changes, the hostname is updated to resolve to the new address. This way, it becomes possible to use a hostname that never changes without needing to worry about which IP address the router currently has.

Part 1: Creating a Dynamic DNS Service Account

To configure the dynamic DNS service on the Cradlepoint router, you must first obtain an account with one of the dynamic DNS providers. The following companies provide free and/or paid services depending on your needs:

Please contact your chosen dynamic DNS provider for instructions on setting up an account.

After creating your account, determine the host name associated with your account, your username, and your password. This information will need to be entered into the Cradlepoint router.

Part 2: Configuring the Cradlepoint Router

To enter the dynamic DNS account information into your Series 3 Cradlepoint, follow these directions:

  • Step 1: Log into the router's Setup Page. For help with logging in please click here.
    • Step 2: Click the Network Settings tab, then select DNS in the drop-down menu.

  • Step 3: Within the Dynamic DNS Configuration section, place a checkmark next to Enable Dynamic DNS.

  • Step 4: Set the Server Type to match your dynamic DNS service provider.
    • Note: If your provider is not on the list, use Custom Server (DynDNS clone) instead. You may need to contact the provider to find out which server address to use.
  • Step 5: Set the Host name, User name, and password obtained in Part 1 of this guide, then reenter your password for verification.

  • Step 6: Click Apply to save your changes.

After making this change, any user trying to connect to “cradlepoint.dyndns.org” will be redirected to whichever WAN IP address that the Cradlepoint is currently using. If this address changes, the Cradlepoint will automatically let the dynamic DNS provider know, and the hostname will be updated to reflect the new IP address.


Troubleshooting

If you are having trouble with the dynamic DNS service, contact your provider to find out whether HTTPS must be disabled, update period needs to be changed, or an external IP override has to be provided.

Keep in mind that dynamic DNS generally works best if the Internet Service Provider assigns a publicly routable IP address. If the assigned IP address is a private (or NATed), router services like remote administration, port forwarding, and VPN will not work, even with dynamic DNS configured. If you have a private IP address, you will need to contact your ISP to have a new IP address assigned that is publicly routable.
