The CradlePoint products that this article refers to are in the End of Life process, there will be no further firmware updates for any of these products.  All Knowledgebase articles related to these products have received their final update.  To view our current product line, please visit https://cradlepoint.com/products.

Description:

Series 1 & 2 CradlePoint routers have the ability to manually update router firmware using a USB flash drive with the firmware file(s) stored on the drive.  Since there is no need to log into the CradlePoint routers administrative console this method can save time -- especially for updating multiple routers.  Currently, Series 3 CradlePoint routers do not have the ability to manually update router firmware using a USB flash drive.

Directions:

A USB flash drive no larger than 4 GB with FAT or FAT32 file system is required.  Not all USB flash drives will work for this procedure.  For best results use a basic USB flash drive.  This update method will not affect any files stored on the drive.
  1. From a computer connected to the internet go to http://www.cradlepoint.com/firmware
  2. Select the correct router model from the drop-down list, then download the latest firmware and 4G WiMAX modem driver.
  3. Save the files for your desktop.  Note:  the firmware files are binary and cannot be opened on your computer.
  4. Rename the saved firmware file using the convention below:
    ModelDefault Firmware NameRename to
    MBR1200u_mbr1200_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_mbr1200.bin
    MBR1100                       u_mbr1100_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_mbr1100.bin
    MBR1000                      u_mbr1000_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_mbr1000.bin
    MBR900                       u_mbr900_XXXX_XX_XX.bin   u_mbr900.bin
    MBR800                         u_mbr800_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_mbr800.bin
    CBA750u_cba750_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_cba750.bin
    CTR500u_crk_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_crk.bin
    CTR350u_ctr_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_crt.bin
    PHS300  u_phs_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_phs.bin
    CBA250u_crkipt_XXXX_XX_XX.binu_crkipt.bin
  5. Rename the WiMAX modem driver file to u_modem.bin.
  6. Copy the firmware and WiMAX modem driver files into the root directory of the USB flash drive.
  7. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port on the CradlePoint.
  8. Depending on the CradlePoint router model either the ExpressCard (EC) or Modem (MDM) light will begin flashing.  This will update the router’s firmware.
  9. When the light becomes solid, remove the USB flash drive from the router.  The router will automatically reboot.
  10. After the reboot completes re-insert the USB flash drive back into the router.  Again, the EC or MDM light will begin flashing.  This will update the WiMAX 4G modem driver.
  11. When the light becomes solid, remove the USB flash drive from the router.  The router will automatically reboot.
  12. Verify that the router firmware and WiMAX 4G modem driver has successfully updated from the router administration console, click TOOLS then select FIRMWARE from the gray sub-menu on the left.
NOTE:  As mentioned some USB flash drives will not be detected by the router.  When the USB flash drive is inserted into the router if the ExpressCard (EC) or Modem (MDM) light is solid red the USB flash drive will not work for the firmware update.  Try using a different USB flash drive.
