NCOS: LP4 Modem Firmware Management

Products Supported: All AER Series routers, CBA850, IBR6x0B, and IBR11x0 (With Dual-Modem Dock) . Click here to identify your router.

Note:  LP4 Modem firmware is stored locally on the Cradlepoint router, unlike previous versions of Cradlepoint modems where the firmware is stored on the cellular modem.

This article provides instructions on how to manage the firmware of the LP4 modem through the local device and through Netcloud Manager (NCM)

LP4 Modem Firmware Changes

With the release of the LP4 Modem and 6.1.2 Firmware, there will be some differences on the Modem Firmware page. You will now see two carrier firmware options listed within the installed firmware list. The firmware that has a check mark within the Active column is the modem firmware that is currently being used.

You will be able to update each modem firmware individually by following the directions below.

How to Automatically Upgrade LP4 Modem Firmware

Configuration Difficulty: Intermediate
  • Step 1: Log into the router's NCOS Page. For help with logging in please click here.
  • Step 2: Click on System, then System Control, and then Modem Firmware from the navigation menu.

  • Step 3: Select the Modem you wish to upgrade from the Modems: drop down list.
  • Step 4: The Cradlepoint will check online to see if there is a new firmware version. If there is a new version available it will display the new version.
  • Step 5: Click Upgrade to begin the automatic firmware update.

The modem will now go through the following stages as it applies the modem firmware.

  1. Downloading
  2. Validating
  3. Setting Mode
  4. Flashing
  5. Applying Firmware

After the firmware is applied, the router will reboot and the modem will reconnect (this process can take a few minutes). A double check of the firmware should show it has been updated and no longer show an update available.

How to Manually Upgrade LP4 Modem Firmware

You will first need to download the firmware files by following this guide. After you have downloaded the file, please return back to the guide here to finish the upgrade.

  • Step 1: Log into the router's NCOS Page. For help with logging in please click here.
  • Step 2: Click on System, then System Control, and then Modem Firmware from the navigation menu.

  • Step 3: Select the Modem you wish to upgrade from the Modems: drop down list.
  • Step 4: You will see four different modem firmware listed. One for each Carrier type.
  • Step 5: Click the File on the Carrier firmware you wish to upgrade to begin the manual firmware upgrade.

Note: LP4 Modem firmware is stored locally on the Cradlepoint router.

  • Step 6: Click the Select Firmware button and select the firmware you recently downloaded.
  • Step 7: Click the Begin Firmware Upgrade button to start the upgrade process.

The modem will now go through the following stages as it applies the modem firmware.

  • Step 1: Log in to Netcloud Manager
  • Step 2: Select the Devices tab and then Network Interfaces

  • Step 3: Next we need to locate the modem we want to upgrade. The easiest way to do this is by sorting the Router Name or Router ID column, or to search by a specific router name using the search tool.
  • Step 4: In the example shown below, the grid is filtered using the search tool (searched by a specific router name, IBR600B) and the filter tool (selected Modems) in the top toolbar so that only the two relevant interfaces display.

  • Step 5: To check if the modem firmware is current or to upgrade modem firmware, first select the desired interface.
  • Step 6: Once you have selected an interface, click Commands in the top toolbar and Manage Modem Firmware.

  • Step 8: Once you open the Manage Modem Firmware dialogue, you can select the desired carrier firmware you wish to upgrade.
  • Step 9: To have NCM check for the latest firmware, click the Check button. If a new firmware is available NCM will display "Upgrade Available" with the latest firmware version.
  • Step 10: If "Upgrade Available" was displayed, you can choose to upgrade the selected carrier firmware by clicking Upgrade.

  • Step 11: You should now see the downloading status progressing within the dialogue.

  • Step 12: You are also free to exit this window after starting the download. The download will continue in the background and you can view the status from the Network Interfaces page.

  • Step 13: Once complete, the Modem FW Status will show "Upgrade Successful."

How to switch LP4 Modem Firmware to a different carrier (NCM)

  • Step 1: Log in to Netcloud Manager
  • Step 2: Select the Devices tab and then Network Interfaces from the drop down menu at the top.''

NOTE: IBR600B with an Internal LP4 modem supports 2 firmware images at a time.  This modem supports auto-switching carrier based on the active SIM.
